About

Your humble author.

Howdy!  My name’s Dean.  Welcome to The Beerverse.

As more and more beer publications cease print editions or go dark completely, I’m stepping into the void to give my local Bay Area beer community a platform to announce events, beer releases, general news — anything they want to tell the marketplace.

Living in the Bay Area offers me access to some of the giants of craft beer, from pioneers, to legends, to writers.  I’ve enjoyed talking to them all, and if you’d like to join them, get in touch!

My bona fides?  A Craft Beer Appreciation Certificate from Sonoma State University, a genuine enthusiasm for all things beer, and a decent ability to string words together in a somewhat entertaining order.

FREE-STUFF DISCLAIMER

I’m not going to pretend I’m an unbiased journalist here. I’m too much of a cheerleader. Yay beer!

So with that said, gimme all of it — samples, festival tickets, all-expense-paid marketing shindigs, or any free beer-related swag. I’ll take it.  Contact me for shipping info.

BUT … just ‘cuz I accepted the stuff doesn’t obligate me to write favorably about it, or even write about it at all.  But if I do, I’ll be sure to disclose the stuff is free and let my readers decide if I’ve been unduly influenced.

[NOTE:  all that being said, if you do go through the trouble of flying me somewhere, putting me up, and giving me free tours/food/beer, it would ALL have to be pretty crappy for me NOT to say something nice about you.  Just sayin’.]

LOOKIN’ FOR A WRITER??

If you need someone to write some nice, pretty words for you, consider this blog my resume.  Take a look around, and if in spite of that you still think I can help you, give me a holler.

Since I’m relatively new the game, I come cheap — 20¢ a word, or free beer and/or swag.

Yes, I will truly work for beer.

[PRO TIP: I’m especially good for newer breweries/pubs/taprooms who don’t have large ad budgets. If you can only afford to give me stuff rather than actual cash, we can work a deal.]

In general, if you have any tips on beer people/places/things to see/go/do, give me a shout!  Enjoy!

Took some time off work recently to remind ourselves of why we pay such stupid $$$ to live here.

Took in a @sfgiants game, first time we’ve been to Oracle since it was AT&T. Giants beat the Padres in a pitcher’s duel 2-1, and it ended so quickly we had time for some wine before catching the ferry back to Richmond.

Later in the week, it was off to brunch in Sausalito, followed by a stop at the Marin Headlands. Breathtaking, and got to wander around one of the batteries that used to keep watch over the Golden Gate.

Yes, we have our issues, but I’m so thankful to be a Bay Area native. Retiring here is still TBD, all the more reason not to take any of this for granted. 🤎🤎🤎🤎🤎

Only attended one @sfbeerweek event this year, but I chose wisely — the @eastbrotherbeer 5th Anniversary party! The place was, um, hopping.

They did it up right. Food trucks, live music, and of course, plenty of great beer. Started off with their wonderful English Pale ON CASK! (Jealous?) Also enjoyed a very smooth and slightly hazy (???) DIPA, as well as Brave Noise Pale, a beer that advocates for safe spaces and inclusive environments in the brewing industry.

Plus, I got a brick! Full disclosure, this was a raffle prize benefitting local non-profits. I did donate, but did not win this directly. @beerbybart, who was also in attendance, wanted to support the cause but wasn’t really interested in the prizes, so Gail said she’d give me the prize if she won. And she did! She was thrilled it would be staying with a Richmond native.

But EB was kind enough to send me home with their collaboration with @drakesbrewcrew, Cold IPA.
Hop crackers. Trust me. If you can find it, snag it. Delicious. Thanks, guys!

‘Til next Beer Week, cheers y’all! 🍻🍻🍻

It's back, y'all!!

@sfbeerweek returns beginning this Friday, with some twists. Instead of a big opening gala, each chapter of the Bay Area Brewers Guild is hosting its own kickoff party at breweries around the bay. Be sure to check sfbeerweek.org for a complete listing of events and participants, which is being updated daily!

As in past years, each Guild chapter has also produced its own collaboration beer specifically for Beer Week, all of which will be served at the local kickoff parties. Lucky for me, @delcielobrewing, who partnered with @temescalbeer and @headlandsbrew for the East Bay collab Intrinsic Enhanced West Coast IPA, is just 10 minutes down the freeway, so I was able to snag some.

No, this isn't an IPA on steroids. It's "enhanced" with an ingredient derived from New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc grape skins called Phantasm, used to draw out and amplify the tropical hop notes.

Whatever it does, it works. Unlike hazies which can get a little musky at times, this features bright, punchy citrus notes and a relatively light, zippy body. Kinda similar to the "cold" IPAs that have become the thing lately. Crisp, hoppy, and tart. If a 6.8% beer can be "crushable," it's this one. Be careful!

A final note. It's been a brutal couple of years for the industry, as it has for everyone. If you're attending an event, be a human. Most places are understaffed, and the people bringing these delightful treats to your face are busting their asses for not a lot of $$. Show them your respect and appreciation by being beyond nice and tipping them MOST HANDSOMELY!! Anything less than 20% is not nearly enough love.

Cheers, and enjoy Beer Week, y'all! ❤️🎉🍻

One last time.

Like everyone, I was stunned when word came down that @marinbrewing would be no more. 33 years is a long run doing ANYTHING. In brewpub terms, it’s an epoch!

The thing is, you can’t plan these spaces. This place grew, aged, LIVED. It wore its decades proudly, from the worn wood floors to the varnished tables to the coaster art and photos covering nearly every inch of its many walls.

Looks like the odometer’s gonna wind down at about 75K barrels. That’s a lot of love and laughter Brewed In Marin.

Farewell, MBC.

Oh, and Novato peeps, give a little extra love to @moylansbrewery, won’t ya? Don’t wait until you can only go one last time. 🍻🍻🍻

Another shoutout to the good folks @roadhousebeer for sending his treat — Vixen Goddess Oud Bruin with plums, part of their barrel-aged Funk House series.

What’s an Oud Bruin? Basically a blended sour dark ale that originated in the Netherlands and still quite popular in Belgium. Oud (or “old”) refers the aging process, which can take more than a year.

Still working on my sour game, but the plums add a nice tartness, and lively carbonation brings a bright spritziness to it all. Nice change of pace, and surprisingly smooth drinking for all its complexity.

And the Niners somehow pulled one out and made the playoffs, so it’s been a very good day. Cheers, y’all!! 🍻🍻
