Devil’s Canyon California Sunshine IPA

July 5, 2012 by Deano

6f03d-photojul0371650pmStyle:  Rye IPA
Brewery:  Devil’s Canyon Brewing Co., Belmont, CA
ABV:  7.1%
Purchased:  Whole Foods ($4.50/22 oz. bottle)

Light copper color.  Assertive hope nose, with the rye adding spice and a bit of nuttiness, which carries to the palate.  One of the best Rye IPAs I’ve ever tasted.  While many examples of the style use rye as only an afterthought, here it demands attention, adding depth, richness, and spice, while the hops add a great bite at the end.  Terrific.

Devil’s Canyon is a unique place.  They brew their own, offer contract facilities for other companies, and also offer brew-your-own services, although due to popularity availability for these services is limited.  They also have a beer club, which is limited to 100 members and frequently has a waiting list.  They are open to the public each Friday from 4 to 6pm.
