As Summer approaches, one’s palate seeks a lighter-bodied and, shall we say, more “pound-able” brew to enjoy while soaking up the increasingly long afternoons. However, in the past one has had to sacrifice small things like flavor and aroma in order to enjoy a Summer beer session.
Not any more.
Drake’s has put its foot down and said “Har-rumph!” to those who say you cannot have a tasty, low-alcohol, hop-flavored beverage and has brought forth the Alpha Session. Clocking in at a tidy 3.8% ABV while still managing a tongue-tingling 50 IBUs, this is the perfect solution for your weekend barbecues. Crisp, clean, refreshing, and above all, HOPPY. I love, love, love this beer. Go ahead and crack another one while you give the tri-tip another turn. Stupendous.
Another benefit of the session beer is that it leaves room for something more substantial as the evening wears on. Something like, say, Anderson Valley’s Heelch O’ Hops Double IPA.
To be honest, this is the first AVBC beer I’ve had in a while. Years ago, I found their Hop Ottin’ IPA way out of balance, with not nearly the grain bill needed to give a decent foundation to the hops. I’ve heard others describe it as “hop water.” I, of course, would never say such disparaging things.
If the Heelch O’ Hops is any indication, I’ve been missing out. This is a wonderful beer. Ample hops, of course, but what tremendous balance and drinkability this beer has! Easily one of the easiest drinking DIPAs I’ve ever had. Deceptively smooth, it wears it’s 8.6% ABV and 100 IBUs very well.
I’m sorry I misjudged you, AVBC. I look forward to renewing our relationship over many a pint in the future.
*Coffee in Boontling. Yeah, I know this post has nothing to do with coffee. These clever titles don’t write themselves, sometimes you gotta stretch a little.
