The Classic Pairing — Beer and … Nutbutter?

December 31, 2018 by Deano

You ever think about nutbutter? Yeah, me neither. But when the folks at Nutista offered the chance to try their latest nutbutter collaboration with Stone Brewing, Xocoveza, along with the beer that inspired it, I tried my best to wait a few seconds before saying “Yes, please!!” Wait, Stone is collaborating on ... nutbutter? Huh? Three partners formed Nutista in … [Read more...] about The Classic Pairing — Beer and … Nutbutter?

Goodbye, Session. Hello, Something Else??

November 11, 2018 by Deano

I suppose we should have seen this coming. If you follow Jay Brooks on Twitter, you’ve seen how it’s been harder and harder to find people to host each month’s Session.  More and more often someone (sometimes him) would step in at the very last minute, which is great but would of course limit participation as everyone only had a few days, at most, to come up with a … [Read more...] about Goodbye, Session. The Session — My Beer Story

May 6, 2018 by Deano

For this month's Session, Alistair Reece at Fuggled has chosen a topic he calls Sepia Tones, basically a look back at what makes your Beer Story. Without further ado, here's mine, albeit a bit late. (And by the way, Mr. Reece, many thanks for jumping in to host at the last minute.) My Beer Story started as a child in the San Francisco Bay Area. Dad would tell me to … [Read more...] about The Session — My Beer Story

How to Home-Brew — from Someone Who’s Never Done It

April 22, 2018 by Deano

[EDITOR’S NOTE:  The following was written for a freelance job that fizzled.  Since I have the Mount Rushmore of writer’s blocks right now, I’m repurposing it here. BTW, if anyone has any flashes of insight about something that hasn’t been covered (no, the world does NOT need another hazy/glitter beer piece), it’d be cool if you sent it my way.  I could use a thunderbolt at … [Read more...] about How to Home-Brew — from Someone Who’s Never Done It

The Bottle Cap Project — CALL FOR ENTRIES

April 8, 2017 by Deano

My wonderful wife gave me this for Valentine’s Day. Cute, right? She’s very sweet to indulge my little hobby.  She’s not into beer at all, but she humors me when I want to stop at a brewery or taproom during our travels, she nods politely and feigns interest when I excitedly pass along some cool (to me) beer news, and she’s always willing to give me a ride to and from … [Read more...] about The Bottle Cap Project — CALL FOR ENTRIES

Well, it took them moving all the way down to Marin County for me to do it, but I FINALLY made it to @henhousebrewing.

Their newest location, in the former @ironspringsbrewery in Fairfax, manages to be hip and comfortable at the same time. The rustic coziness has given way to an airy, modern, minimalist space, with a nifty little alcove tucked in back if you just want to chill with friends over some drinks (wine is also available).

And the beer? C'mon, this is HenHouse, everything's gonna be amazing. I enjoyed the Big Science DIPA (on National IPA Day, no less), which was musky and dank, and wore it's 8% a little too well.

Took home a real treat, as well. The Beer 2000, an Imperial Stout celebrating their 2000th batch, won a Gold Medal at the CA State Fair, and for very good reason. It's quite simply amazing. Roasty, bitter, chocolatey and rich, it's impeccably smooth and balanced. One of the best stouts I've ever had. It's a sipper at 9.9%, but oh, it's so easy to drink.

Tons of great beer out there, people. Go grab some. Cheers, y'all! 🍻

Well, @armisticebeer, rye not??

Been waiting for a suitable day to crack open this 13.5% stout, aged 22 months in Templeton Rye barrels, and the overcast and wind told me today’s the day! ☁️🌬

Inky dark and glass-staining, viscousy and maple-syrupy, with a slight peppery edge from the rye, lifting the finish and prepping the palate for the next sip. Perfect for warding off the, dare I say, chill???

Oh, I’m told this is a reference to some sort of internet meme?? Dunno, something the kids are into, I guess. 🤷‍♂️

Cheers, y’all! 🍻🍻🍻

Hey people. Quick run to Concord this weekend, just a heads-up for you fellow beer geeks.

@ejphairconcord has been back open for business since December, and I'm happy to see them back. Just an instantly comfy vibe there -- grab a seat at the bar and feel immediately at ease. They aren't back to brewing their own beers quite yet (they hope to soon), but they more than make up for with a killer guest tap list. I enjoyed an amazing @cooperagebrewing @cellarmakerbrewing hazy DIPA collab Thiol Thunderstorm. Dank and hazy at the same time. Tremendous. Went extremely well with my grilled cheese and tomato bisque.

Right next door is @hopgrenade, where I did a little shopping. I want to emphasize, these places are literally steps from each other. They freakin' share a common wall, for chrissakes. The ratio of mind-blowing taps/sq.ft is off the charts. Plus, @sidegatebrewing is a few blocks across the plaza. Just an insane amount of good beer flowing in downtown Concord. Take BART or Lyft if you need, but make a day of it.

One of my purchases was the perfect-for-summer Nuggets of Wisdom Cold IPA from Elk Grove's @flatlandbrewing. This is my first from them, and if this is any indication, I've got to venture out to the valley. Clean, crisp, snappy hops. Terrific.

Finally, if you're thinking of dragging me into the Cold IPA/India Pale Lager debate, forget it. Are they the same? Maybe. Are they verrrrrrry similar? Absolutely.

Frankly, I don't care. This style(s) has quickly become one of my favorites, and I'm here for all of them. Bring 'em on.

Cheers, y'all! 🍻🍻
